Tori no Emery Awards 2017

Tori foi convidada à cerimônia do Emery Awards desse ano, para prestar homenagem a seu amigo de longa data Kevyn Aucoin. Kevyn foi um talentoso maquiador que faleceu há 15 anos e serviu de inspiração para a canção Taxi Ride. A voz da Natureza em Native Invader

Tori Amos é uma cientista de seus ideais e emoções. Observa os fatos, analisa-os às vezes a cru, e ao sintetizá-los acessa a dimensão das Musas e dela traz suas canções ao nosso plano. Por toda a visceralidade de sua obra, é esperado que se posicione como a humana que é para assumir tal empreitada; no entanto, em seu disco mais recente, Native Invader, são muitos os momentos em que Tori deixa-se um pouco de lado para dar voz a um elemento recorrente em seus trabalhos: a Natureza, como a criatura mais profusa, compassiva e restauradora entre todas.

Movida por tragédias sobre sua vida e seu país de origem, Tori não respondeu à dor e ao ódio de forma agressiva, colérica. Inspirada pela resiliência natural, a persistente capacidade de um ser em suportar impactos e, mesmo mudado, permanecer de pé, as músicas de Native Invader convidam ao conforto, à reflexão consciente e à surpreendente noção de que existe uma saída para todas as coisas. Com isso, a pianista deixa de ser a mulher para tornar-se a Grande Mãe, a defensora de todas e todos, a Invasora Nativa desperta e dotada da luz necessária para que sejamos guiados à melhor versão de nós mesmos. Como indivíduos, como sociedade.

Nesse contexto, a voz do álbum nos leva a reconhecer a desconexão íntima, e a necessidade pungente de ganharmos consciência de nossa própria existência. Ainda que Tori use de pano de fundo os graves problemas de saúde que sua mãe vem suportando nos últimos meses, o chamado vai longe, profundo e certeiro, até o inabalável cerne de cristal que não pode ser ouvido, visto ou tocado — ele deve ser vivo, deixar-se vivo, algo difícil quando o cotidiano nos embrutece, as notícias nos cegam e viver nos fere. Mas é preciso voltar-se a si mesmo, ir às luas de Júpiter, até quem sabe descobrir que somos feitos de estrelas! Dos elementos lançados por explosões estelares ao espaço, aqueles que constituem nossa origem comum e nos tornam uma fraternidade de universos. O sentimento fraterno portanto também deve ser resgatado.

Em canções como “Wings” e “Chocolate Song”, consideradas precocemente meras reflexões conjugais, há um sentimento de compaixão latente, de tentar compreender o outro e permitir por meio disso que ambos sejam mudados. Para além do amor físico, do desejo de se fazer uno com alguém, existe uma noção de irmandade e um convite a pensar em conjunto, a buscar nas discussões mais consensos que desterros emocionais. A saber que não se odeia profundamente quem se ama, e é possível por meio do respeito construir um lugar seguro para possam expressar suas angústias, incertezas e dores particulares. Seja em relações interpessoais, seja numa nação dividida pelo medo.

Native Invader acaba sendo um disco intrinsecamente político. Sua criação deu-se num mundo cada vez mais acirrado e despedaçado, onde noções de segregação e terror ganham momento por todos os lados. Mais uma vez, não obstante, sua voz narrativa nos convida a não temer o prognóstico escabroso do futuro, mas a agir com perspicácia e inteligência para combater os precipitados e imprudentes, aqueles que não nos levarão até onde devemos chegar. Em “Benjamin”, por exemplo, sugere-se haver um exército do intelecto que por suas virtudes pode desmoronar a miséria moral dos que estão no poder. Confunde-se até com a Milícia da Mente, citada em “Up the Creek” e responsável por agregar à tapeçaria do álbum a questão ambiental.

Se nesta canção Gaia é reverenciada em seu esqueleto rochoso — de onde viria o cerne de cristal? — e alardeada como carente de proteção, “Bats” nos rememora de um acordo firmado entre forças naturais e a espécie humana, a qual teria de ser guardiã de sua Mãe original. Também, há espaço para celebrar a abundância da Terra, na expressão mais singela de que para mudarmos nosso destino é preciso fazer chover. Em "Wildwood", o desejo sexual confunde-se com a ânsia por semear, germinar e encher de verde as vastas paisagens naturais que por hora parecem mortas. É a motivação em crer que a primavera, assim como Perséfone, logo retorna.

Ainda que multifacetada, tal motivação é única e capaz de nos propelir contra as adversidades. São estas inclusive que devolvem ao Native Invader a fragilidade tão humana que lhe assenta, faz perceber nossa cara incompletude refletida na obra. Ao tratar do amargor da traição em "Breakaway", das lembranças sombrias e enevoadas de “Climb", e da dor tão aguda de não saber “what's behind Mary's eyes", agrega-se ao disco a carne e o espírito feridos, implorando por restauração, por recriação. Com bravura e uma suave calidez, no entanto, Tori confunde-se à voz transcendental e em dado momento, nos assegura que sairemos dessa tempestade. Nós sairemos dessa tempestade.

Criando terreno para que forças maiores pudessem visitá-la e guiá-la a uma solução re-criativa para as dores do mundo, Amos permitiu que sua humanidade brilhasse como um reflexo de todos e todas nós. Indicando que a Invasora Nativa é capaz de lutar contra aqueles que subtraem mais e mais de nossa Grande Mãe, a pianista amalgama delicadamente energias proativas e reativas para que reflitam a totalidade de um único Amor, sábio e resiliente. Finalmente, convida-nos a apreciar e também proteger essa figura materna fundamental, a qual está sob ataque e precisa de nossa guarda e respeito. “Podemos trazê-la somente Deleite?”, conclui afetuosamente.

The voice of Nature in Native Invader

Tori Amos is a scientist to her own ideals and emotions. She observes the facts, analyses them to the bone and after synthesizing the findings, is able to access The Muses dimension to bring some song girls from there. Because of the visceral aspect of her work, it is expected to find her in a very “human” position to take this hard task; however, on “Native Invader” — her 15th studio album — there are a lot of moments in which Tori sets herself aside a bit, in order to a very familiar voice take place: it’s Nature, as the most profuse, compassionate and restorer creature of all.

Moved by tragedies on her personal life and country of origin, Amos didn’t respond to the grief and terror in an aggressive way. Instead, she was inspired by natural resilience, the power of one’s self to take some hits, adapt and eventually stay stand, which turned “Native Invader” into an invitation to self-care, consciousness and the surprisingly wonderful notion that there’s a way out, if we act right. Here our beloved pianist embodies the Great Mother, who guards and nurtures everyone, the awaken native invader lifting the lamp to guide us to a better version of ourselves. As individuals, as a society too.

At first, this leading voice calls us out to recognize the inner disconnection and the need to reconcile ourselves with our very own existence. Although Tori’s talking about her mother’s delicate health situation, the message of “Reindeer King” goes deep and afar, to the unshakeable crystal core which may not be heard, seen of touched — but it’s alive, must be alive, something we may forget because of everyday troubles, tragic news and the harshness of life itself. But you gotta get you back to you, to the moons of Jupiter, to wherever it takes for you to know that we’re all made of stars! A molecular machine of chemical elements released by exploding supernovas, the elements that constitute our common origin and certify us to be a fraternity of universes. May the fraternal feeling be rescued as well.

With tunes like “Wings” and “Chocolate Song”, early considered merely about marital issues, there’s a sense of bigger compassion in trying to understand the other person and allowing this new comprehension to change both parts forever. Going above physical love, there’s an urge for brotherhood (and sisterhood) and for thinking together, in a way that arguments can be turned more into consensus than emotional pits. It’s knowing we don’t hate for so long people we truly cherish, and recognizing that through respect it is possible to build a safe place for everyone to express anguish and uncertainties. But this doesn’t apply only to interpersonal relationships; safe places are much needed to a planet divided by fear.

It turns out “Native Invader” is an intrinsically political album. Its conceiving happened in a chaotic and torn apart world, where segregation and terrorist ideals gather momentum everywhere. One more time, though, its guiding voice suggests us not to fear the scabrous prognosis for the future, but instead to take action with diligence and wisdom against the rash and reckless, the ones who won’t get us to where we want to be. In “Benjamin”, for example, there’s a hint of an intellectual army that by virtue can overcome the moral venom of those in power. This army may be part as well of the Militia of the Mind, referred on “Up the Creek” and responsible for weaving environmental issues into the album fabric.

In this song Gaia’s revered for the knowledge sown inside her rocky bones — maybe the original crystal core? — and we are ultimately alerted to protect her. This goes back to “Bats”, in which we are remembered of an ancient deal made between natural forces turned into creatures and humanity, who took the task to guard their first Mother. Finally, there’s room to celebrate Earth lushness, by the plain statement that in order to change our fate we ought to make it rain. In “Wildwood” sexual desire gets mixed up with the craving for sowing, filling with green those wide landscapes who may seem dead by now. It’s the motivation that makes us believe spring, just like Persephone, soon will return.

This multifaceted motivation is able to propel us against any kind of adversity, although adversity itself plays an important role in “Native Invader”: it gives back to the album a sense of human frailty, making us see our bittersweet incompleteness reflected there. By talking about sour betrayal in “Breakaway”, the somber and hazy memories of “Climb” and finally the acute pain of not knowing what's behind Mary's eyes, there is flesh and blood, wounded souls begging for restoration, for out-creation. With bravery and warmth, though, Tori takes the guiding voice back and assures we’ll be riding out this storm. We’ll be riding out this storm.

By allowing higher forces to visit and lead her to a different perspective of the pain in the world, Amos let her sense of humanity shine through to wake the native invader in all of us. She’s the one who will face those who take more and more from our Great Mother; the one invoked by the delicate amalgamation of proactive and reactive energies; the one who reminds us of a greater love, wise and resilient. Finally, our pianist tells us to appreciate and protect that fundamental motherly spirit, which is under attack and demands our watch and respect. “Can't we just bring her Delight?”, she fondly concludes.
