Spinner: Tori Amos Offers All Moms a Mother's Day Gift -- Exclusive Download

This Mother's Day, Tori Amos wanted to extend a special gift to all mothers in the best way she knows how: with song. 'Maybe California' -- off her May 19th-due album, 'Abnormally Attracted to Sin' -- was written, as she describes it, from one mother to another, who, as the lyrics explore, is contemplating suicide. The tune itself is meant as a saving grace, of sorts.

"There are people in our lives, and we all know them, that are able to give even in the darkest of times," Amos, who has an 8-year-old daughter, Natashya, says. "Even when they seem depleted. But somehow by giving, they gain this magical light. Even the most giving person needs a gift every once and a while, just to know they are seen and appreciated. 'Maybe California' is my gift to you."

Tori Amos
Abnormally Attracted To Sin •••
Island

Musicalmente, a canção tem uma vibe contemplativa e espacial, o que lhe faria caber bem no To Venus and Back.

"Tori Amos with Limited* Autographed CD Booklet!"

Pre-Order either of the upcoming releases, Abnormally Attracted To Sin or Abnormally Attracted To Sin: Deluxe Edition, by Tori Amos and get a limited* autographed CD Booklet with purchase!
About Tori Amos:
On May 19th, 2009, Abnormally Attracted To Sin, the tenth Tori Amos studio album, will be released on Universal Republic. Amos describes Abnormally Attracted To Sin as "really handmade. I wanted to make a treasure, something people will value."

Like all of Tori's albums since Boys For Pele, Abnormally Attracted... was recorded at Martian Studios in Cornwall, England by Tori's husband Mark Hawley and his partner Marcel van Limbeek. The center of the album is Amos's voice, and her Bosendorfer piano, locking in with her touring and recording band of the past five years: guitarist Mac Aladdin, bassist Jon Evans and her longtime drummer and rhythmic foil, Matt Chamberlain.

One of the most valuable parts of Abnormally Attracted To Sin is the bonus DVD, an element that is often a lame attempt to jack up the sticker price in other instances. Not this time. The DVD contains sixteen "visualettes" directed by Christian Lamb, who filmed Amos and her band during the American Doll Posse tour. "Christian jumped on the bus and made daily montages of the band's life on the road, using music from the live shows as a soundtrack to the footage," Tori said. "When I saw what he had done, the new songs started to come to me." The visualettes are not videos in the traditional sense - there is no lip-syncing. Amos thinks of them as "silent movies," citing early movie star Mary Pickford as a reference point.

Some of Tori's characters from American Doll Posse appear in footage Lamb shot over the past year and a half. Some visualettes are interspersed with live footage from the tour, while others were filmed to work with the songs that would come to her later. Rather than literal visual representations of lyrics, Lamb's images are complicated and integral to the logic of Abnormally Attracted To Sin.

"Abnormally Attracted... is made up songs I wrote on the road watching Christian's footage, and the songs I wrote after spending some time in California, which is where I had lived before Little Earthquakes was released," Amos explained. The album title is a line from Guys and Dolls, originally spoken by the character Sarah Brown. The phrase came to Tori before she recorded with the band, but after she had written the songs. Sin, in this case, is not necessarily what you're thinking of.

"I wanted to really investigate how we're controlled by the threat of despair," Amos said. "I wanted to look at power - how we think and how you can reclaim the right to think for yourself, to uncover what you believe in as a spiritual, sexual creature. You don't need the approval of your family, or of their religion. You can think, 'Wait a minute, I'm a spiritual being. Just because I like gold handcuffs doesn’t mean I'm not a spiritual being. These definitions are not for my mother to make about me.' What I am exploring with this record is power, and giving it away with your thinking. How do we become controlled?"

"I'm a minister's daughter. The power of the church is insidious, and it permeates everything," Amos explained. "A lot of what the Church discusses is not about the compassionate path of Christ, it's about what kind of lifestyle is acceptable and approved of by the Church when god knows what they're doing behind closed doors. You have a lot of people waking up every morning who feel paralyzed to act because of these judgments. All around us people are not only experiencing physical bondage but emotional and mental bondage behind perfectly groomed lawns. Inside acceptable addresses the definition of bondage is perversely explored with those we know only too well. Moving from the personal to the political, 'Strong Black Vine' investigates the effect of religious intolerance, another form of bondage."

The mood for much of Abnormally Attracted To Sin is dark but charged, like a late night conversation (or confession) held over several bottles of wine. The album doesn't take the regression lightly, and fights back as hard as Amos has ever fought. The title track moves over an impressively thick synthesizer line Amos wrote and played, feeling a bit like club music that's wandered out into a dark side street to think for a moment. "People are being forced to question what they believe in," Amos said. "We're being brought back to questions which make up our foundation: 'Who am I? What do I really believe in?'"

Abnormally Attracted To Sin is the work of someone who knows, with a fierce certainty, what she believes in. Anybody, whether it’s a newcomer or a lifelong member of Tori's phenomenal fanbase, will feel that certainty. "Passion is a seducer, and this music is passionate. Even though somebody might be drinking beer, if they see the color of that red wine, it looks like blood, it looks so delicious - they might just have to taste it. I'm good old red wine. By letting myself age I think I'm better for drinking beginning in 2009."

Tori Amos
Abnormally Attracted To Sin •••
Island

With her tenth studio album Abnormally Attracted To Sin becoming her fourth in a row to clock in at over 75 minutes, it’s time to face facts: Tori Amos is, in the most literal sense, generous to a fault. What’s more, it’s a fault that gets more and more frustrating with each overstuffed biannual offering. Equally cursed and blessed with a gift that keeps on giving, Amos could justifiably lay claim to the title of the hardest working person in the industry, and there is much to be admired in her tenacity and acumen. But where is the line between the desire to provide and a staggering lack of editorial control? Somewhere, Amos has crossed it.

In keeping with the spiritual idea of ‘the gift’, Amos has always been convincing in her belief that core parts of her songs are gathered subconsciously out of the ether, and Abnormally Attracted To Sin continues that thread. When the songs first flooded in, she had no plans to make an album. How could she? She was already promoting a book (the impressionistic visual feast of Comic Book Tattoo), prepping a live DVD, and writing a stage musical based on a Victorian fairytale. But Amos hasn’t made it to ten albums by staring gift horses down the gullet and she dutifully tuned in.

It would be somewhat churlish to say that the signal got scrambled but Abnormally Attracted To Sin draws on several disparate elements – many of them familiar Tori-tropes – and consequently suffers from a see-what-sticks approach. As a result, we encounter some extreme shifts from the sublime to the ridiculous, while the sequencing all but decimates the dynamic segues and transitions between songs that are so characteristic of her earlier work. Anyone desperately hoping for a return to something even distantly approaching cohesion should probably switch off after the first four songs.

It all starts out so perfectly, you see. As album openers go, you couldn’t do much better than ‘Give’. An intense hit of sophisticated electronica, it’s like biting into a slab of Moroccan dark chocolate after the enjoyable yet ultimately shallow confections of American Doll Posse. A portentous drumbeat stalks through the heart of the song as Amos delivers perhaps her finest vocal performance in a decade, simmering with a potent rage in the verses and arcing high into her upper register on the chorus. Both piano and electric guitar are used sparingly, while a disorienting wash of synths buzzes across the speakers almost constantly.

Aside from the startlingly theatrical performance, part of the beauty of ‘Give’ lies in how open the lyrics are to interpretation. One take that sort of fits in with the album’s general theme – for once we’re not calling this a concept album – of re-evaluating the notions of “sin”, social acceptability and power is that Amos could be singing from the perspective of a prostitute; equally, there is something distinctly vampyric about its references to sunrise and bloodletting. You could even say it’s simply Amos defending her right to make overlong albums, but that’s just not as exciting.

From this deeply cool beginning, first single ‘Welcome To England’ seems almost Tori-by-numbers on the first few listens but the finer details of the production soon emerge. It’s nice to hear the piano competing with the layered synths and guitars and Amos sounds at ease. If it proves anything, it’s that she can still make catchy singles without resorting to butterflies or attention-grabbing acronyms. Post-immigration ambivalence is much more engaging, and the idea of “daily hell” being transcended through creative imagination is something we can all believe in.

The dense, soulful rock of ‘Strong Black Vine’ arrives loudly on a dramatic bed of drums and strings, with some welcome Hammond organ later mixed in with the synths and electric guitar. Lyrically it seems to be a convoluted stab at drawing together the heavy themes of war, religion and America’s insatiable desire for oil; but this is no ‘Dark Side Of The Sun’. Amos muddies her imagery to her advantage, seemingly urging her subject to expand their mind, perhaps by using some of her old friend ayahuasca (a hallucinogenic vine that grows in South America). By whatever means, the oppressor must be made to submit. The much gentler ‘Flavor’ seems to find Amos meditating on the power of the media, though not in an obvious way. The flavo(u)r in question is either fear or love and how we are being influenced to think more with kneejerk reactions than considered compassion, especially with regard to misunderstood belief systems. Or at least that’s one take. Musically it has a contemplative, spacey feel and would have fit right in on To Venus & Back. Beaming back to Earth, however, Amos was deflected off course and ended up somehow on a bus with a gambler, a cleaner and a puppeteer. Yeah, don’t ask. Without putting too fine a point on it, ‘Not Dying Today’ is pretty much heinous on every level, and from then on the album becomes an assault course of awkwardly juxtaposed moments.

Predictably, some of the songs have a made-for-Broadway feel and Amos walks a fine line with these. ‘Maybe California’ may not seem like an obvious stage production at first, but when the brushed drums sweep in and the chorus starts to swirl it’s hard not to picture it as one of those pivotal, pre-intermission ballads. Embellished with beautiful strings, it has some genuinely touching moments but lyrically is perhaps too direct. By way of contrast ‘Abnormally Attracted To Sin’ defies any expectations imposed by lifting its title from ‘Guys & Dolls’ dialogue, taking the reference and spinning something totally fresh and unexpected out of it as a thick miasma of synths and Hammond takes us right to the threshold of the church Amos warns us not to enter if saddled with the titular affliction.

The tragedy of Abnormally Attracted To Sin as a whole is that there are really two distinct bodies of work here, and they just don’t belong on the same disc. One is consistently inventive, riveting and (most importantly) believable; the other is a campy romp of character studies that, while typically big-hearted, could have used some fine-tuning. ‘500 Miles’ is prime skipping material, while the initially quite promising ‘Police Me’ is destroyed by some horrendous lyrics, sadly a defining feature of the album’s weaker tracks. The brilliant nuances, quirks, allusions and wit we have come to expect from Amos are occasionally lacking. Instead we get clumsy references to “slutty goths” and sat-navs. We’d rather have an ear full of cider. In comparison, ‘That Guy’ and ‘Mary Jane’ are at the thick end of the theatrical wedge and find Amos in a wily, kittenish mood that will probably translate better live.

Of the songs belonging to that other, killer album, ‘Starling’ and ‘Ophelia’ are solid, if a little familiar, while the charming Southern twists and odd pronunciations of ‘Fast Horse’ stack up surprisingly well. ‘Curtain Call’ is Amos at her mysterious best with a good use of tension in the music. The lyrics are intelligent and full of interesting sex and drugs metaphors that feel autobiographical but also expansive in that you can project your own experiences into them. ‘Lady In Blue’ is a wonderfully hypnotic epic that builds deliciously slowly into a lengthy and superb instrumental climax. After ‘Give’ it’s easily the album’s most surprising inclusion, full of smouldering passion and curlicues of smoky, spellbinding intrigue, and easily matches the best of her incredible career. The gorgeously autumnal and uncluttered bonus track ‘Oscar’s Theme’ harks right back to her solo piano days, and as the background hiss fades away you’re left with palate cleansed but wanting more of this Tori, rock’s peerless pianist who can get beneath your skin in just one breath. That is her gift.

We’ll probably never know why Amos has grown to insist upon her recent work trying to be everything to everyone, but Abnormally Attracted To Sin is easily her most uneven listening experience. That’s a crying disservice to the fantastic album contained within its sprawl and it would be a genuine pity for people to hear the likes of ‘500 Miles’ and write it off. Amos’s idea of reclaiming the concept of sin from the church doesn’t really provide a coherent thread so it will be interesting to see what the bonus DVD of accompanying “visualettes” contributes, if anything.

It has been six years since she last put out an album that felt like a carefully constructed and concise artistic statement. And as long as Tori Amos remains abnormally afraid of censoring herself, it seems the whole will continue to betray the sum of its parts.

Tori Amos explora regras de atração no “Pecado”

Por Christa Titus

NOVA YORK (Billboard) - Tori Amos sempre coloca as mulheres primeiro lugar.

It's a Bitch to Grow Up" (?). Abaixo, o texto original:

ABNORMALLY ATTRACTED TO SIN

As you undoubtedly know by now, Tori Amos is just about ready to release her tenth studio album. Abnormally Attracted to Sin will be out on May 19th via Universal Republic.

The album title is a line from Guys and Dolls, originally spoken by the character Sarah Brown. "Sin," in this case, is not necessarily what you’re thinking of.

“I wanted to really investigate how we’re controlled by the threat of despair,” Amos said. “I wanted to look at power—how we think and how you can reclaim the right to think for yourself, to uncover what you believe in as a spiritual, sexual creature...What I am exploring with this record is power, and giving it away with your thinking. How do we become controlled?”

"WELCOME TO ENGLAND"

Tori Amos has also unveiled the video to the song "Welcome to England," the first single off "Abnormally Attracted to Sin." This gorgeous miniature film is one of 16 "visualettes" directed by Christian Lamb who filmed Amos and her band during the American Doll Posse tour.
“Christian jumped on the bus and made daily montages of the band’s life on the road, using music from the live shows as a soundtrack to the footage,” Tori said. “When I saw what he had done, the new songs started to come to me.” The visualettes are not videos in the traditional sense—there is no lip-syncing. Amos thinks of them as “silent movies,” citing early movie star Mary Pickford as a reference point.

“AATS is made up of songs I wrote on the road watching Christian’s footage, and the songs I wrote after spending some time in California, which is where I had lived before Little Earthquakes was released,” Amos explained.

Tori Amos explores rules of attraction on "Sin"

By Christa Titus

NEW YORK (Billboard) - Tori Amos always puts ladies first. The singer-songwriter created a concept album about female archetypes ("American Doll Posse"), has rewritten men's songs from a female perspective ("Strange Little Girls") and connected to fans with haunting, brutal personal portraits -- "Me and a Gun" is a spare tale of her own sexual assault.

With the release of her first album for Universal Republic, "Abnormally Attracted to Sin," out May 19, Amos tackles yet another thorny subject: women and power.

"I am kind of fascinated with the idea of erotic spirituality," she says. "But first, I wanted to investigate what people are attracted to. Some of the songs are about situations where people are struggling with their power, and find themselves attracted to people that have power over them. Dominance has become an aphrodisiac for some women. But there are also songs about women finding their inner strength."

Amos is fully aware of her own strength as an artist. When she sat down with Universal Music Group chairman Doug Morris to discuss her Universal Republic deal, her longevity and devoted fan base gave her considerable clout. Amos, who has her own publishing and merchandising companies, was firm about not wanting a so-called 360 agreement, or multiple-rights deal, in which recording artists share not just revenue from album sales but concert, merchandise and other earnings with their label in exchange for more comprehensive career support.

"Tell me the upside of a 360 deal unless it's about $100 million?" she asks rhetorically. "I have to give half of it in tax, and a huge percent to my attorney, and then that's all I've got? And someone else owns songs I haven't even written yet?"

Amos defines the contract as a joint-venture agreement. Universal Republic president/CEO Monte Lipman adds, "There is just a tremendous amount of respect we have for Tori, and when it comes down to her vision and the way she wants up to operate, she has a lot of say in that."

The artist herself is a force to be reckoned with on the new album, which blends rock beats with flashes of the avant-garde. Her sense of humor is evident in the lighthearted "Not Dying Today" and the slightly camp "Mary Jane," but songs like the jaded "Curtain Call" and the electronic chirping of "Starling" reveal a pensive side. The song "Maybe California" deals with a mother who feels inadequate as a parent.

Amos observes that women often quietly shoulder the burden of keeping a family intact, especially in these times when the economy creates emotional and financial strain.

"We define powerful men with being providers. We're back to that idea of power again, how to define what is power," she says. "When you have a relationship where both are not feeling powerful, because we've equated success with having a job and the breadwinner is laid off, the effect that that can have on the family is beyond description."

The packaging of the album reflects Amos' thematic concerns. "I love the way (photographer Karen Collins) shoots women. It's not vulgar or demeaning, but I find it just sexy. They look empowered to me, and I like her style. I felt that if we were gonna walk this line of erotic spirituality, which is quite a line to walk, I realized the two words don't necessarily usually end up on the same table together in the same sentence. But it was a delicate line to walk."

Abnormally Attracted To Sin: letras (continuação)

Mais 4 letras do Abnormally Attracted To Sin foram divulgadas pelo site HereInMyHead.com: Curtain Call, Fire To Your Plain, Mary Jane e Lady In Blue. Confira:

Curtain Call

ebony beauty
pass this shade
the looking glass relects
then a voice calls me back,
"this is just circumstance it is not
personal", oh no it never is.
then you ram your hand in your bag
for a little friendly substance

By the time you're 25
they will say, "you've gone and blown it".
By the time you're 35, I must confide,
you will have blown them all
Right on cue just act surprised
when they invite you to take
your curtain call
you climbed China's wall
your
curtain call

I have done what I've done
and it has the ultimate consequence
then a voice calls me back,
"this is not business, no,
its more like spiritual"
is that what it is
Then you ram your hand in your bag
for a little protection

By the time you're 25
they will say, "you've gona and blown it."
By the time you're 35, I must confide,
you will have blown them all
Right on cue just act surprised
when they invite you to take
your curtain call
you climbed China's wall
your curtain call

ebony beauty
pass this shade
the looking glass reflects

Fire To Your Plain

Shock
got the shock of my life
just buckle up girls
I'm stealing the night
From them
steal the night
What they're down to
let's see in cold day light
I gotta get this right
I gotta get this right

Cause she's up
And I am low
Watching you
Watching her play this game
yeah she's bold
bold enough
to set fire to your plain
her fire to your plain

Pray
you can pray to your jane
I put out the call
but not to be saved
Called my Deviline kin
with her yellow Astin Martin
"we gotta get this right"
I gotta get this right

Cause she's up
And I am low
Watching him
Watching her play this game
yeah she's bold
Bold enough
to set fire to his plain

she said, 'Get in and set the SAT-NAV to hell"
Or would it be Purgatory
I gotta get this right
I gotta get this right

Cause she's up
And I am low
Watching you
Watching her play this game
yeah she's bold
Bold enough
to set fire to your plain
Her fire to your plain
Her fire
Bold enough
Her fire to your plain

Mary Jane

Then he said, "Mom I want to forna...
I mean formulate and discover the realms of the unknown
with Mary Jane
After all you'll be away for the weekend
Just please consent
I need a friend"

I admit your puberty was somewhat strange
Could this be fixed with Mary Jane?
Mary Jane Mary Jane Mary Jane Who?

Then I said, Son you want to permeate
And discover the realms of the unknown
With Mary Jane
After all the other boys that are your age
They only wake to medicate

Do I know her family?
Is she even mannerly when she's out in society?
"She even bakes"
She even bakes?
"These odd brownies"
Mary Jane Mary Jane Mary Jane Who?

Then he said, "I believe in her family,
On her maternal side there was a
Dr. Tetrahydrocannabinol Pure Isomer Dronabinol
Mary Jane Who.

Lady In Blue

Cigarettes recommended
"Need a Light to use?"
said the Lady in Blue after the rain
What is left?
What is right... you may understand,
I left the right man.
said the Lady in Blue,
"I left the right man."

Boys play well into midnight
"Can I join you?"
said the Lady in Blue after the rain

"Pillow cold, but She won't stray into other lands," he said,
"Take my hand," to the Lady in Blue,
"You wronged the right man."
Cigarettes recommended
"Need a Light to use?"
said the Lady in Blue,
"I wronged the right man"

Boys play well into midnight
"Can I join you?"
said the Lady in Blue after the rain
Boys you play well into midnight
"Can I join you?"
said the Lady in Blue
said the Lady in Blue
said the Lady in Blue,
"I can play too."

Artigo: Glasswerk National - "Tori Amos New Album "Abnormally Attracted To Sin""

New Album “Abnormally Attracted To Sin”, released on May 18th on Island Records. “I wanted to make a treasure, something people will value”, says Tori Amos on her stunning new album ‘Abnormally Attracted To Sin’ - released on her new label Island Records, on May 18th.

“AATS” is indeed a treasure. An elaborate feast made from home-grown stock, offered up to a generation fed on small meals made with cheap ingredients. “AATS” is Amos at her most passionate and most comfortable.

The album has a typically detailed and wide sound, dominated by dark, rich reds and hints of silver (“I want to make audio mescaline” Tori said). The mood is dark but charged, like a late night conversation (or confession) held over several bottles of wine.

“AATS” (the title is taken from a line in “Guys & Dolls” spoken by the character Sarah Brown) is the work of someone who knows, with fierce certainty, what she believes in. Anybody, whether it’s a newcomer or a lifelong member of Tori’s phenomenal fanbase, will feel that certainty.

The 18 tracks on “AATS” were recorded in Cornwall by Tori’s husband Mark Hawley and his partner Marcel Van Limbeek. They are:

Give / Welcome To England / Strong Black Vine / Flavour / Not Dying Today / Maybe California / Curtain Call / Fire To Your Plain / Police Me / That Guy / Abnormally Attracted To Sin / 500 Miles / Mary Jane / Starling / Fast Horse / Ophelia / Lady In Blue / Oscar’s Theme (bonus track – UK only).

There will be a covetable deluxe edition of the album which features a bonus DVD containing 16 “visualettes” directed by Christian Lamb (who filmed Tori and her band during the “American Doll Posse” tour).

A single, “Welcome To England” – taken from the album – will be released on May 25th.

Tori will be playing a one-off solo acoustic show at London’s Savoy Theatre on April 27th where she will be performing tracks from “AATS” as well as songs from her back-catalogue.
